2011 - off and running.

Wow that flew past!  Can't believe it's April already.

Had a massive start to the year awesome clients, stunning models, new collaborations.

I don't think I've posted much from my lookbook shoots to date - so I might start with one from Jan for the awesome Leina Broughton.  I have a lot of fun on our shoots (no no it's work honestly).  The model is Chloe from Division - stunning!

I also shot the beautiful Sarah from Vivien's in January - first a quick beauty shoot, then a shoot with ID Couture styling and Vivianne Tran for makeup and hair.  Also modelling for us with ID Couture was Stephanie.

Also some other very cool test shoots with Samantha and Sarah (thanks!!):

Feburary was a fairly quite month as I recovered from January (and a birthday that plants me smack into my mid-thirties..sigh)

I did get to do a fantastic bridal collaboration with Gemma (Embellished Makeup and Beauty) and her friend and MUA Jade.  Styling by Begitta Stolk :)

The photo immediately below is a simple speedlight/umbrella combo kindly held above our model (Barbara @ Division) by Jade's patient husband.

This next photo also used the speedlight/umbrella combo (camera left) for a little added "pop" on the natural light.  Nothing dramatic...just a subtle lift.

So - a very exciting start to the year - March was also a lot of fun and April is shaping up quite nicely as well.

Year wrap 2010

Have been keeping busy busy busy!

For me 2010 was about finding a bit more balance in life and this lead to slightly fewer photoshoots compared to 2009. This was partly a result of work outside photography increasing in pace - that has been an interesting journey as well with its shares of highs and lows. Fortunately I'm blessed in both aspects of my working life to be surrounded with teams of people I admire and respect - which makes the tougher times much easier to bear and the fun times so much more enjoyable!

I also worked with some new clients in 2010 and their support was much appreciated!  It was very humbling to have these local businesses put their trust in me to help build their brand.  I'm happy to say that the results were some great photos and, I'm told, that sales were very successful for the lines we covered - professional photography clearly still has a place in grabbing market attention.

The other big change for me in 2010 was forming an alliance with a local fashion retailer - Princess Polly.  This led to four shoots and I was really given scope to explore new techniques and ideas.  Their enthusiasm and the vision they brought to the table really helped fire my imagination and stretched my photography that bit further.

Oh and I met a little personal goal of mine this year by working with models from all of the major Brisbane agencies.  It's a nice little ego boost that the photoshoots we do continue to get selected by agencies for comp cards etc.

I'm also incredibly proud of the models and makeup artists that I work with that have been finding increasing amounts of work in the industry.  It's a pretty tough business and their successes are hard won.  In particular the two MUA's I work with most regularly have been seeing work in the film and television industry this year!  Congrats Gemma (@ Embellished Makeup Artistry) and Vivianne (@ Simply Elegant Beauty).

And before I forget, with Vivianne I did some photos for an online, international makeup competition.  I'm pleased to say that not only did she get highly commended in the fashion category but she took out first place in the Pin Up makeup section.  The shoots were all a lot of fun, I'd never really done pin up before and had a great time with Vivianne and our model Stephanie.

What else....

I built my own little place on the internet: gfphotography.com.au - it's nice to have somewhere to show prospective clients to.

And in the last year I invested again in learning (feeding my obsession) and can recommend the following:

Photographic and Lighting:

Kelby Training
Zack Arias on Creative Live (or try the One Light DVD - I also will look at the One Light Field Guide)

Retouching:
Lynda.com
Gry Garness ebooks

There were of course many other blogs and sites that I spent time on (Strobist still is a regular read for me) - but the above represent where I found most value.

I find myself at times thinking "I know enough now, I can figure it out from here myself..." and each time some new revelation pops up and knocks me back down to earth.  It's amazing how much depth there is in this field, even just in the tiny niche I work within - and how much talent is out there.  The internet is truely an incredible space with so much information available for the looking.

In 2011 I'm hoping to improve my composition and getting outdoors...hopefully the local weather becomes a bit more camera friendly soon as there's only so many "grey cloudy day" shoots that I'm interested in doing!!

Anyway - thats enough rambling!  Bring on 2011!

Some more photos and a lighting tip....

I get asked on occasion about my lighting so I'll share my no. 1 tip - it's not ground breaking stuff by any stretch.

For portraits I generally lean towards soft lighting - the trick for this is to get a large light source, and get it in close close close.  I'm often in so close I need to crop or Photoshop out the corner of a softbox/umbrella from a frame.

There are other advantages to being in close - less power is required - often essential if using small lights on location.

The downside is the light source size may need to be large should you want to have full length coverage - otherwise you need to back that small light up and lose some of the softness for more even lighting.

There are endless essays on the web about this sort of thing - the sites I go to for learning in this space are Strobist.com (which is free and an invaluable resource) and Kelby training (which I pay to subscribe to on and off - lots of video content).

Any way - this may be my first and last pseudo instructional post - perhaps it will help someone else out there.

The following are from a shoot I did with Erica's Jewels (www.ericasjewels.com).  Model Stephanie Coutts.  MUA Vivianne Tran @ simplyelegantbeauty.com.au.

All key lighting is an 80x120cm softbox up at camera right and in very close to Stephanie.

Busy times of late have completed a number of shoots for clients in the last two months - exciting times!

In reverse order...

Princess Polly - local Brisbane fashion store:

This is my second shoot with the Princess Polly team - we got some fantastic results.
Models: Brittney @ Dallys and Sarah @ Division, MUA Vivianne Tran.

In late March I shot for Erica's Jewellery with the beautiful Veronica @ Dallys - MUA Vivianne Tran.

Earlier in March I shot for a start up local business Pink Lotus Leotards - our lovely model is gymnast Barbie Belford.

And at the beginning of March I had my first shoot with the Princess Polly team (Model: Brittney @ Dallys - MUA: Vivianne Tran)

In between I did a couple of portfolio shoots for Brisbane models, and some head shots for local actor Axal Huskisson.

Veronica @ Dallys

Axal Husskisson:

Good Times!

Oh somewhere in there I launched my website Geoff Francis Photography now has a home on the internet!  www.gfphotography.com.au.
